Mother baked it long and slow, brown sugar on the top, fragrant cloves rowed up in diamond-pattern style. Potato salad made with egg, and mustard, pickle relish too. When I became the Mom, I changed the pickles out for celery; it was the 70\u2019s, and freshness was in vogue. In recent years of living on my own, I\u2019ve favored eating out; sit back and be catered to, I say.<\/p>\n<p>Where in Sacramento would I find some Easter ham? I browsed the internet, made a list of brunches at the big hotels and fancy restaurants. Do I really want the $50 elegance? The stand-in-line, the crowd? I\u2019d need a nap, lose an afternoon for sure. So, something else. The internet revealed a matinee, <em>Woody Guthrie\u2019s American Song. <\/em>It just so happens I\u2019ve been humming one of Woody\u2019s tunes as I\u2019ve been traveling west. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>From California to the New York island\u2026.from the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Those Gulf stream waters are not too far behind and I\u2019m in California now. The words keep floating round\u2026<em>ribbon of highway, endless skyway, golden valley, diamond deserts, dust clouds rolling;<\/em> I feel like I\u2019ve been traveling right behind that Guthrie mind.<\/p>\n<p><em>This land was made for you and me\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I called the number listed to see if I could get a last-minute ticket; no answer; I decided to just show up and see. \u201cYes, tickets are available,\u201d I was told by the lone person inside at the counter, \u201cbut they won\u2019t start selling for an hour.\u201d I headed out the door.<\/p>\n<p>A young woman coming in nodded; smiled at me. \u201cAre you in the play?\u201d I asked, and she confirmed she was. We began to talk, exchanging names (I&#8217;m Linda, she&#8217;s Jazzmen)\u00a0talking of the play, and finally giving one another life advice, thoughts framed against the meaning of the words that Woody wrote.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Jazzmen-JJ-Travis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-798\" title=\"Jazzmen, JJ, Travis\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Jazzmen-JJ-Travis-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Jazzmen-JJ-Travis-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Jazzmen-JJ-Travis-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Jazzmen-JJ-Travis-420x300.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Others joined us, just outside the door, JJ and Travis, the folksinger, and the guitar. They talked about their roles, the thrill of being in the play. They posed for pictures before they had to go. \u201cI need some lunch,\u201d I said, and Skyler pointed down the street, \u201cNick\u2019s Diner,\u201d he recommended, \u201cit\u2019s pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Nicks-Diner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-800\" title=\"Nick's Diner\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Nicks-Diner-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Nicks-Diner-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Nicks-Diner-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Nicks-Diner-419x300.jpg 419w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I found Nick\u2019s, on Harbor Blvd, delighted with the look of it.\u00a0A 50\u2019s place, a juke box to poke your quarters in; it took me back, to days with Mom and Dad, to Mrs Dilworth\u2019s Home Ec class (she told us Coca Cola would eat our stomachs out).
