All synchronized to a powerful classical score.

What am I talking about? I’m talking about Van Gogh Alive – The Experience, Drawing a Link Between Science and Art, showing at two places in the world right now: Istanbul, Turkey and Phoenix, Arizona. More than 50,000 visitors showed up the first month at Antrepo 3 in Istanbul, and crowds are flocking to the Arizona Science Center too, where the show continues through June 17.

Exploring the work and life experiences of Vincent Van Gogh during the period 1880 to 1890, the production interprets his thoughts, feelings and state of mind as he created many of his timeless masterpieces.

“Poetry surrounds us everywhere, but putting it on paper is, alas, not so easy as looking at it.” This thought from Van Gogh flashes on the wall as brilliant color moves around the rooms; familiar sunflowers, the sparseness of the artist’s bed, sunlit days and starry nights. Photos and letters augment the vivid images.

“This is a technologically cutting-edge, creative approach,” says Bruce Peterson, owner of Grande Exhibitions, the Australian company that created this unique show. “We wanted something that is totally refreshing and emotionally engaging.”

The technology behind the show, and the artist’s story itself, draw a clear link between science and art. This quote from Einstein graces the wall as you exit the show: “The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious-the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science.”

Arizona Science Center, Van Gogh Alive.
