We are sitting at Gate 20 in the Honolulu airport, wearing long sleeves now; dressed for Seattle\u2019s cooler temps that will surely shock our senses as soon as we get off the plane. It\u2019s the last moments of our stay in Honolulu, and we\u2019re reminiscing. \u201cEverything was fun,\u201d I answered. \u201cWhen I could see through my hair blowing in my face.\u201d \u201cWell that was just one day then,\u201d Kayla said, \u201cwhen we <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Linda-towel-heads.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5352\" title=\"29 Kayla Linda towel heads\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Linda-towel-heads-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Linda-towel-heads-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Linda-towel-heads.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a>were towelheads in our room!\u201d That brought giggles from both of us, yep, those tropical breezes are part of the attraction in Honolulu, moderating the sun and the warm morning rains. So what was the most fun thing? \u201cI liked the Aquarium today,\u201d Kayla threw in. \u201cAnd going into Diamond Head.\u201d \u201cYou liked the Trolley Driver,\u201c I said. \u201cBecause he kept telling you how cute you are!\u201d It\u2019s true, he\u2019d let her get off the Trolley for pictures, and wait till she was done before resuming the Tour. \u201cShe\u2019s so cute,\u201d he\u2019d say when she got back on. \u201cDid you get what you wanted, little one?\u201d She tipped him big, with money out of her own pocket. So Honolulu, what was the most fun? <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-belly-ball-run.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5363\" title=\"29 Kayla belly ball run\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-belly-ball-run-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-belly-ball-run-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-belly-ball-run.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>Kayla had fun in the Belly Ball. It was actually called a\u00a0Water Ball, a huge zippered clear plastic inflatable floating on a small pool of water in the International Market Place by our hotel. We passed it by <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-belly-ball-laugh.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5403\" title=\"29 Kayla belly ball laugh\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-belly-ball-laugh-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-belly-ball-laugh-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-belly-ball-laugh.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a>several times and finally walked over one afternoon \u00a0just for that. Shoes off, step through the opening, air pumped in, zip it up, roll up the platform and into the pool. Kayla ran inside the ball, and jumped, and lay laughing as her balloon was bumped by the next one. \u201cWhat was it like inside?\u201d I asked when she finally chose to get out. \u201cIt smelled like feet,\u201d was the answer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Monica.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5365\" title=\"29 Kayla Monica\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Monica-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Monica-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Monica.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a>\u201cIt was fun meeting my new friend Monica,\u201d Kayla said. \u201cShe was really nice. And she opened up the Senate Chambers just for us.\u201d Monica was Director of Visitor Services at the capitol, and she got the Chamber doors unlocked and took us inside to see, explaining the symbolism of the design, and the procedures used during Session. \u201cEither English or the Hawaiian language may be spoken,\u201d she explained, \u201csince both are official languages in Hawaii.\u201d Monica also told us how to spot a real Hawaiian. \u201cWe don\u2019t call those \u2018flip-flops\u2019\u201d she said, pointing to Kayla\u2019s shoes. \u201cWe call them \u2018slippers.\u2019\u201d \u201cRemember trying to get pictures <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Linda-Bad-Hair-Capitol.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5370\" title=\"29 Kayla Linda Bad Hair Capitol\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Linda-Bad-Hair-Capitol-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Linda-Bad-Hair-Capitol-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-Linda-Bad-Hair-Capitol.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/><\/a>together out in front of the capitol?\u201d I added. \u201cThat was a day of wind in our face!\u201d \u201cThat was fun,\u201d Kayla said. \u201cRemember all the skyscrapers around the capitol? Somebody was dozing on dryers at the back of the room while I guarded Kayla as she wrote out her postcards at the front. And it wasn\u2019t fun waiting outside on the sidewalk for our ride when we had a tour scheduled. I didn\u2019t like not having our own wheels to get around. \u201cNo, that wasn\u2019t fun, but the tours were, especially the submarine,\u201d Kayla reminded me. \u201cI loved that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Linda-Chinamans-Hat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-5389\" title=\"29 Linda Chinamans Hat\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Linda-Chinamans-Hat-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"95\" height=\"126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Linda-Chinamans-Hat-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Linda-Chinamans-Hat.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 95px) 100vw, 95px\" \/><\/a>\u201cAnd I loved the ranch,\u201d she continued. \u201cI\u2019ll always remember riding up the mountain on that little cart where we could see Chinaman\u2019s Hat out there in the ocean. I got lots of pictures there. I got your picture GMom. I wanted to ride horses but we didn&#8217;t have time.\u00a0I loved our balcony and looking out at the ocean every morning and shooing <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-arms-up.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5395\" title=\"29 Kayla arms up\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-arms-up-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-arms-up-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-arms-up-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/29-Kayla-arms-up.jpg 1778w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a>away the pigeons, even the one that marched into our room. That was funny. And I loved our hotel lobby and getting chocolate milk at the little grocery store in there. I loved the banyan trees, I never saw a tree like that before! I loved Diamond Head! I\u2019ve been inside a crater now!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Did we have fun? The announcement blared\u00a0that it was time to board; we gathered up our wheelie bags and cool-weather sweaters and headed towards our plane. Goodbye Honolulu.
