We wake up at Hannah Point, known as the \u201cjewel in the crown\u201d of the Antarctic for its diversity of species and glorious scenery. A light snow, faintly blowing across the deck, but snow, nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>For certain, I will enjoy the delights of Antarctica from the warmth of the Torghatten Salong today, sitting in a comfy chair with cameras occasionally recording the magnificent view.<\/p>\n<p>And, writing. There is a contest! Manuel Marin has challenged us. Manual is part of our lecture\/teaching staff, an Ornithologist from Chile (PhD from LSU!), a researcher of neotropical birds. So far, his lectures have included: <em>Cormorants, the Untold Story; Penguins, Those from the other side; Penguins, The brush-tailed, Life and Death Part 1; Penguins, The brush-tailed, Life and Death Part 2.<\/em> Manuel knows penguins. His lectures are <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=18613\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18613\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-18613\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA183.e-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA183.e-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA183.e-765x1024.jpg 765w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA183.e-768x1028.jpg 768w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA183.e.jpg 1062w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a>entertaining: he passes around penguin parts for us to see (<em>see the foot, they are very sharp!)<\/em>; he giggles as he shows us slides of penguins mating <em>(ooo, Triple X, ladies cover your eyes!<\/em>). \u201c<em>Pebbles are like diamonds,<\/em>\u201d he explains, describing a penguin nest. \u201c<em>The male offers a pebble to a female during the courtship ritual. These are of utmost value! Better than chocolates! Better than Chanel #55! So good!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without the pebbles, there is little protection for the egg. A pile of pebbles makes for good drainage too. An egg left sitting on bare ground is more likely to freeze, or crack. \u201c<em>You think it is OK to take one pebble home?<\/em>\u201d Manuel asks us, looking stern, searching for a guilty face. \u201c<em>You think one pebble will not matter?<\/em>\u201d A pause. \u201c<em>Twenty-four thousand visitors came to Antarctica last year. If each person took ONE PEBBLE, what would happen to the beach! What would happen to the penguins! Do not take the pebbles! Do not pick up the feathers! If you promised this to your grandchild, instead, tell your grandchild how you helped a penguin to have life! Did he make his point? Still, Manuel wants us to think more. To understand the penguin. So, now there is a contest. Doug sits near there too, his watercolors spread on the tabletop, brushing daily memories onto paper. I\u2019m sure he\u2019ll have a beautiful bird to submit.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t sew, or paint. But I like to write. Especially humorous takeoffs on the <em>Night Before Christmas<\/em>, at least, at Christmas time. Hmmmm, I\u2019m thinking, as I see the penguins walking, far away, along the beach. In my mind I see the little Adelie penguin who passed me by the day before, hobbling and hopping over the rocks, her tiny wings an afterthought by her creator? Penguins. They can swim, but they can\u2019t fly. What might a penguin wish for? I began to scribble, on a yellow pad\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u2018Twas the night before Christmas,\u00a0<\/em><em>and all through the ship, <\/em><em>every creature was stirring, <\/em><em>celebrating their trip!<a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=18620\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18620\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-18620\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA209.e-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"593\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA209.e-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA209.e-1024x707.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA209.e-768x530.jpg 768w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA209.e-1536x1060.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/CFAA209.e-2048x1413.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>But the penguins were nestled,\u00a0<\/em><em>all snug on their nests, <\/em><em>having spent the day hosting, <\/em><em>the Nord-nor-gay as guest.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Adelie and gentoo,\u00a0<\/em><em>they welcomed our walk, <\/em><em>enduring the kameras, <\/em><em>with barely a squawk.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>On came Evie and Stevie,\u00a0<\/em><em>on came Lily and Luke, <\/em><em>with a flap and a waddle, <\/em><em>then the Duchess, and Duke.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>With pebbles like diamonds,\u00a0<\/em><em>all piled in a stack, <\/em><em>each went for their lunch, <\/em><em>and then each came back.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>No dishes to wash,\u00a0<\/em><em>no laundry to do, <\/em><em>the life of a penguin, <\/em><em>seems all lovey, and woo.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>When the spring light first came,\u00a0<\/em><em>and the weather got dandy, <\/em><em>the Lukes and the Lilys, <\/em><em>began to get randy.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Hey baby! They called,\u00a0<\/em><em>You are looking so fine,\u00a0<\/em><em>take this pebble of love, <\/em><em>and you can be mine.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Oh hoochy! Oh coochy!,\u00a0<\/em><em>Stand still! I\u2019ll be quick.\u00a0<\/em><em>But Lily is fickle.\u00a0<\/em><em>Did Luke give her a chick?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Footprints on her back,\u00a0<\/em><em>show she\u2019s tried it before. <\/em><em>It\u2019s only insurance!\u00a0<\/em><em>Our sweet Lily\u2019s no whore! <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The wedding is over,\u00a0<\/em><em>the nest is complete. <\/em><em>Lily sits like Queen Sheba,\u00a0<\/em><em>piles of rocks at her feet.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Luke stands guard for the skua,\u00a0<\/em><em>They both watch for the seal.\u00a0<\/em><em>The egg and the instinct\u00a0<\/em><em>are honored, with zeal.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Some penguins are jealous,\u00a0<\/em><em>They had no such luck. <\/em><em>They sneak to steal pebbles. <\/em><em>They fuss, and they cluck.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>But Lily is fearless\u00a0<\/em><em>and Luke remains cool. <\/em><em>The egg is kept warm.\u00a0<\/em><em>It\u2019s their asset, their jewel.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Peck Peck! He says quickly,\u00a0<\/em><em>Come and get in my sleigh,\u00a0<\/em><em>I will take you up flying,\u00a0<\/em><em>Up up up, and away!<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>More rapid than skuas,\u00a0<\/em><em>his coursers they flew, <\/em><em>and Lars knew at that moment, <\/em><em>heartfelt wishes come true!<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>The penguins below,\u00a0<\/em><em>saw Lars wave from his flight, <\/em><em>as he called, \u201cHappy Christmas! <\/em><em>And to all, a Good Night!\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I decided to hand it in.
