Today is the end of the <em>NDI RTW<\/em>. Tonight, I sleep in my own bed after 40 days of almost non-stop travel. I wonder if Katy cat will even remember me. But this morning I woke up in Washington, DC with two of my grandchildren, and this reality: our flight to Little Rock, the <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17357\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17357\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17357\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-boat.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a>only DIRECT flight available (and I couldn\u2019t bear going through Atlanta) didn\u2019t depart until 6 PM. And the three of us were burnt out on DC sightseeing. So what could be better than a nice calm boat ride on the Potomac River to Mt Vernon? We were in agreement, up and packed and checked out by 8; at the Water Taxi dock in time to leave at 9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17359\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17359\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17359\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-georges-house-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-georges-house-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-georges-house.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a>The trip was a pleasant ride, the Washington skyline, a stop in Alexandria, and then ashore by 10 at George Washington\u2019s <em>Mount Vernon Estate.<\/em> \u201cYou just added Virginia to your state count,\u2019\u201d I told Kayla and Sam. We had four hours of our own time to wander; George and Martha\u2019s home, their tomb, the farm and farm animals, a gristmill and distillery, the Mount Vernon Inn for lunch. Though there are a few museums there, we went to something called <em>Be Washington<\/em>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17361\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17361\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17361\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-gw-tomb-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-gw-tomb-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-gw-tomb.jpg 598w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17363\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17363\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17363\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-mt-vernon-inn-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-mt-vernon-inn-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-mt-vernon-inn.jpg 492w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 159px) 100vw, 159px\" \/><\/a>interactive movie theater. <em>\u201cStep into Washington\u2019s shoes. What would YOU do? Your daring plan of crossing the Delaware River paid off with great military victories. As Commander In Chief, are you willing to do it again and risk your men\u2019s lives? The Battle of Second Trenton, The Newburgh Conspiracy, The Genet Affair, The Whiskey Rebellion \u2013 all tests of your \u201cpresidential decision-making capacity.\u201d<\/em> That was entertaining!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17370\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17370\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17370\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/16.dc-sparkler.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a>Back at the DC dock at 3:30; a taxi to Reagan Airport, and now we\u2019re flying. Will everything happen that we\u2019re expecting? Kayla\u2019s Dad Rick has been at my house all week, cat-sitting Katy and, I hope, spiffing things up and laying groceries in; that was part of the deal. Sam\u2019s Dad Scott flew in yesterday; my oldest son Mike, and Brenda, picked him up at the airport as they arrived by car from Colorado, so the four of them have had an evening together. Did they make banners? Did they buy balloons? I just trekked around the world at age 81. I want adulation, and cheers! At the least a hand sparkler or two.<\/p>\n<p>I think we\u2019re over Tennessee now. Sam and Kayla have nodded off.
