What a great sound it has! Its meaning is pretty too, &#8220;Abu&#8221; is Arabic for father, and &#8220;Dhabi&#8221; is the Arabic word for gazelle. <em>Abu Dhabi \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17001\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17001\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17001\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-aldar-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"377\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-aldar-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-aldar-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-aldar-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-aldar-1.jpg 1398w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><\/a>Father of Gazelle<\/em>. It is thought this name came about because of the abundance of gazelles in the area. Those gazelles have long since been replaced by people \u2013 the population has grown in the last 60 years from 25,000 to 1.5 million! And skyscrapers you would not believe. Some of the tallest buildings on the skyline include the 1,253 ft Central Market Residential Tower, the 1,063 ft Landmark, and the 74-story 1,017 ft Sky Tower. And not just tall, but unique, the Aldar Headquarters was the first circular skyscraper in the Middle East. Because of its coin shape, it is called the Dirham building, after the Emirati currency.<\/p>\n<p>Abu Dhabi&#8217;s rapid development and urbanization, coupled with its massive oil and gas reserves and relatively high average income, have transformed it into a large, developed metropolis. It is the capital and the second-most populous city of the United Arab Emirates (after Dubai), and accounts for about two-thirds of the $400 billion UAE economy. Abu Dhabi sits on an island in the Persian Gulf, though most of the city and the Emirate reside on <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17008\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17008\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17008\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.-ad-map-events-300x207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.-ad-map-events-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.-ad-map-events-1024x705.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.-ad-map-events-768x529.jpg 768w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.-ad-map-events.jpg 1349w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 558px) 100vw, 558px\" \/><\/a>the mainland connected to the rest of the country. I\u2019m one of the lucky ones waking up on the island this morning. My hotel, the Marriott St Regis, is another one of the \u201ctall unusual\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17010\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17010\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17010\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-marriott-x-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-marriott-x-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-marriott-x.jpg 337w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>buildings in Abu Dhabi, and I have never been so close to luxury\u2019s lap. See the \u201cconnector\u201d between the two towers? That is the 3-bedroom private suite with its own elevator to the 46<sup>th<\/sup> floor and a view to die for. That\u2019s not my room, (<em>chuckle, I left my <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17011\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17011\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-17011\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-marriott-bathroom-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-marriott-bathroom-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-marriott-bathroom.jpg 337w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><\/a>helicopter back home<\/em>), but my view is pretty darn spectacular, looking out over the Persian Gulf; for pete\u2019s sake, just look at my bathroom!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17013\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17013\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17013\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-grand-palace-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"376\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-grand-palace-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-grand-palace.jpg 566w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 376px) 100vw, 376px\" \/><\/a>The Presidential Palace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d stay right here at this hotel all day long, except, I am dying to see the skyscrapers here, and I have to visit the Presidential Palace. It\u2019s just down the street, and as of last year, is open for public visits. It is called \u201cQa\u1e63r Al-Wa\u1e6dan\u201d in Arabic, meaning \u201cPalace of the Nation\u201d and is ranked among the top 20 landmarks of art and culture in the world. It could be called \u201cThe White House\u201d \u2013 its fa\u00e7ade is white granite and limestone, intricately designed and ornately decorated. It includes a dome with a diameter of 121 ft, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17020\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17020\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17020\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-chandelier-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"153\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-chandelier-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-chandelier-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-chandelier-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-chandelier.jpg 945w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 153px) 100vw, 153px\" \/><\/a>chandelier with 350,000 pieces of crystal. The dome is located on top of the central chamber known as &#8220;The Great Hall,&#8221; which is surrounded by two wings to the east and west.<\/p>\n<p>The eastern wing has the &#8220;House of Knowledge,&#8221; where a number of artifacts and other objects of importance are stored, such as gifts presented by visiting officials from other countries, religious texts (<em>the Quran and the Bible<\/em>), and a library with more than 50,000 books which document the cultural, social and political history of the country. The western wing is used for official purposes. Meetings of the UAE Cabinet and Federal Supreme Council, and summits of international bodies like the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, Arab League, and Gulf Cooperation Council are held here in a room known as the \u201cSpirit of Collaboration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17015\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17015\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17015\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-etihad-towers-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-etihad-towers-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-etihad-towers.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a>More Skyscrapers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to point out just a few more skyscrapers; the Etihad Towers are near the Palace; five towers keeping company, do they look like swaying grass or trees against the skyline to you? Two of the towers are connected by a walkway on the 75<sup>th<\/sup> floor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17016\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17016\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17016\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-capital-gate.v-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-capital-gate.v-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-capital-gate.v.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>The Capital Gate, just on down the road a way, is referred to as the \u201cLeaning Tower of Abu Dhabi,\u201d and holds the Guinness World Record for the \u201cworld\u2019s furthest-leaning man-made tower.\u201d Completed in 2011, it is also the Middle East\u2019s first building to use a material-saving diagrid form.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=17018\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-17018\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17018\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-al-bhar-towers-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-al-bhar-towers-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/06.ad-al-bhar-towers-1.jpg 345w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>And when it comes to design, look at the twin, 29-story Al Bahr Towers riff on the traditional Arabian <em>mashrabiya<\/em> (geometric window coverings) as an ingenious energy-saving measure; the windows react automatically to the sun, expanding to provide shade and reduce the need for air conditioning. This one was completed in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll tell you what I discover about the food, and the other sights I see in a later post.
