I would have scheduled a much longer stay for the <em>RTW<\/em>, but, when you have only a week to visit an entire continent the size of the US, you have to keep moving. And the mysterious Outback calls.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=16688\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16688\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16688\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.river-torrens-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.river-torrens-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.river-torrens-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.river-torrens.jpg 897w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a>But before I leave, let\u2019s talk about Adelaide, the capital city of the state of South Australia. It\u2019s not only a great place to visit, it\u2019s an even better place to live. It consistently ranks in the Top 10 of \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Livable Cities\u201d as surveyed by the <em>Economist Intelligence Unit<\/em>, which measures a city\u2019s Stability, Infrastructure, Education, Environment &amp; Culture, and Healthcare (both quality and availability). <em>Melbourne and Sydney also ranked in the Top 10, you can\u2019t go wrong in Australia!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Pristine beaches and world-class vineyards don\u2019t hurt a city\u2019s livability quotient, nor does a moderate climate with hot dry summers and mild cool winters. South Australia has two nicknames \u2013 <em>The Wine State<\/em> and <em>The Festival State<\/em> \u2013 and I promised to tell you which I found to be most true. The answer: both are well-deserved!<\/p>\n<p><strong>South Australia\u2019s Wine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=16689\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16689\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16689\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.barossa-valley-people-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.barossa-valley-people-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.barossa-valley-people-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.barossa-valley-people.jpg 865w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a>Adelaide is not only South Australia\u2019s capital city, it is the <em>wine capital<\/em> of Australia &#8211; and one of the nine Great Wine Capitals of the World, alongside Bordeaux in France, Napa Valley in the US and Bilbao Rioja in Spain. There are 18 wine regions in South Australia, here is just a sampling:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Barossa. Over 80 cellar doors, along with five-star retreats. Due to its Mediterranean climate Cabernets and Shiraz\u2019 are unbeatable.<\/li>\n<li>McLaren Vale. Over 70 cellar doors only 40 minutes from Adelaide, close to stunning coastal vistas. World-class Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay.<\/li>\n<li>Clare Valley. Over 40 cellar doors just a scenic 90 minute drive from Adelaide; the Riesling and Rattler Trail cycle path winds through the countryside.<\/li>\n<li>Coonawarra. The Coonawarra is Australia\u2019s top producer of premium red wines. Its wineries also sell some of the best local produce available.<\/li>\n<li>Adelaide Hills. 60 wineries just minutes from Adelaide and one of Australia\u2019s best cool-climate wine regions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The University of Adelaide\u2019s <em>National Wine Centre<\/em> is the showcase for the Australian wine industry. It provides important links with the wine industry, is an important platform for wine education and research, and provides a world class venue for food and wine. A visit there shows the winemaking process from vine to bottle; the Wined Bar offers over 120 wines for tasting. Nestled in the city\u2019s Botanic Gardens. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalwinecentre.com.au\/\">https:\/\/nationalwinecentre.com.au\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>South Australia\u2019s Festivals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=16690\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16690\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16690\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.festival-fireworks-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.festival-fireworks-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.festival-fireworks-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.festival-fireworks.jpg 778w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a>Go back to 1960, when the <em>Adelaide Festival of Arts<\/em> was established with backing of the city and city businesses. Then along came the <em>Adelaide Fringe<\/em> \u2013 an unofficial series of performances and exhibits. In 1970 construction of the <em>Adelaide Festival Center<\/em> began; add the <em>South Australian Film Corporation<\/em> in 1972, the <em>State Opera of South Australia<\/em> in 1976. It all kept growing.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Adelaide Festival<\/em> expanded to include <em>Adelaide Writers\u2019 Week<\/em> and <em>WOMADelaide, <\/em>an open-air festival in Botanic Park celebrating the World of Music, Arts &amp; Dance. Then came the <em>Adelaide Cabaret Festival<\/em>, the <em>Adelaide Festival of Ideas<\/em>, the <em>Adelaide Film Festival<\/em>, <em>FEAST<\/em>, <em>Tasting Australia <\/em>(food and wine, yum). Ever heard of MAD MARCH? Combine the <em>Festival<\/em>, the <em>Fringe<\/em>, <em>WOMADelaide<\/em>, <em>Writers&#8217; Week<\/em> and the <em>Adelaide 500<\/em> street motor racing event, along with evening music concerts all happening at the same time, and you have earned a sure-enough festival reputation.<\/p>\n<p>There are also many international cultural fairs in Adelaide, such as the <em>German Sch\u00fctzenfest<\/em> and <em>Greek Glendi<\/em>. The <em>Adelaide Christmas Pageant<\/em> includes the southern hemisphere\u2019s largest Christmas parade. Yes, Santa shows up in a beard and the floats are decorated with snowmen, though it is warm-weather time there.<\/p>\n<p>There are too many live music and theatre venues to count; <em>Lonely Planet<\/em> labeled Adelaide &#8220;Australia&#8217;s live music city,&#8221; and Adelaide was recognized as a &#8220;City of Music&#8221; by the <em>UNESCO Creative Cities Network<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Next Adelaide Festival 26 Feb \u2013 14 Mar 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelaidefestival.com.au\/\">https:\/\/www.adelaidefestival.com.au\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>WOMADelaid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womadelaide.com.au\/\">https:\/\/www.womadelaide.com.au\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Adelaide November Christmas Pageant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christmaspageant.com.au\/\">https:\/\/www.christmaspageant.com.au\/<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So what do you think? Is South Australia <em>The Wine State<\/em>, or <em>The Festival State<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>As for the capital city of Adelaide, I haven\u2019t yet mentioned EDUCATION (an educational hub, it\u2019s known as a <em>Learning City<\/em>, three Nobel laureates completed education at St Peter&#8217;s College and the University of Adelaide), or SPORTS (home of two Australian Football League teams and one A-League soccer team).<\/p>\n<p><strong>But you should know this HISTORY of Adelaide, population today 1,345,777. <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Named for Queen Adelaide<\/li>\n<li>Founded in 1836 as the planned capital for the only freely settled British province in Australia<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=16695\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16695\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-16695\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.red-kangaroo-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.red-kangaroo-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.red-kangaroo.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 132px) 100vw, 132px\" \/><\/a>Located close to the River Torrens in the area originally inhabited by the Kaurna people and known as Tarndanyangga, place of the red kangaroo<\/li>\n<li>Designed by William Light in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parklands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The new city attracted immigrants from many parts of Europe; German Lutherans in 1838 brought vine cuttings with them that were used to found the wineries of the Barossa Valley; other Europeans escaping religious persecution were attracted to a city founded on religious tolerance; it\u2019s known today as a City of Churches. St Francis Xavier&#8217;s Cathedral was consecrated in 1858; the Central Adelaide Mosque, built to accommodate the spiritual needs of Afghan cameleers, is Australia&#8217;s oldest permanent mosque.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?attachment_id=16691\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16691\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-16691\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.camel-and-man-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.camel-and-man-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/25.camel-and-man.jpg 353w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/a>Which leads to one last historical tidbit, as I prepare to head north to the \u201cred center\u201d of Australia. The Afghan community in Australia became established in the 1860s when camels and their handlers were used to open up settlement in the continent&#8217;s arid interior.
