{"id":16103,"date":"2017-12-29T05:00:46","date_gmt":"2017-12-29T10:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?p=16103"},"modified":"2024-12-03T15:52:51","modified_gmt":"2024-12-03T20:52:51","slug":"making-the-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/?p=16103","title":{"rendered":"Making the List"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Getting High<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s a thrill to \u201cmake the list,\u201d and to be able to proudly proclaim across the top of your book cover \u201cNew York Times Best Seller.\u201d It is wonderful when your book pops up as a \u201ctop seller\u201d with Amazon\u2019s powerful marketing clout.<\/p>\n<p>Sales rankings can change on a dime \u2013 just like the ups and downs of the stock market, not entirely predictable, though the tried and true reliables always seem to do well. A check of today\u2019s best sellers has some newbies at the top \u2013 Andy Weir and Celeste Ng have a second book on the lists, helped no doubt by the resounding success of their first book not so very long ago.<\/p>\n<p>Andy Weir is a hero to all \u201cfirst novelists\u201d \u2013 <em>The Martian <\/em>(2011) was a hit as a book, and then a movie, with Matt Damon, no less. Congrats, Andy, good job! The list is well populated with the tried and true as well \u2013 Dan Brown, John Grisham, James Patterson, E L James, Nora Roberts. Seven men, six women, ages 60 to 25, writing about murder and mayhem, love and romance, and who knows what all. How does an author get to the top? And a better question \u2013 and stay there?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDevelop a following,\u201d is good advice; create a series, perfect a style. That\u2019s the way to sell books.
