I was wrong. My curving descent at Wendover, past the last of the Nevada casinos, showed flashes of white ahead. A battery of signs assailed me \u2013 Mountain Time Zone, Welcome to Utah, High Wind Area. Then another sign, a green directional, that simply said \u201cBonneville Speedway.\u201d I didn\u2019t hesitate.\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0My kids went through a drag-racing phase in their teens, and my brothers followed NASCAR for years. I lived near the Talladega Speedway at one time, and my grandkids have watched the Ricky Bobby movie with me till the snap on the case is broken. We\u2019ve even watched it in French! (You should try that version.) The words \u201cI wanna go fast\u201d send them into fits of laughter. \u201cSpeedway\u201d is a Button Word to us. And a Speedway on SALT? I\u2019ve wanted to see it for years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/BS-66-on-Salt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-1298\" title=\"BS 66 on Salt\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/BS-66-on-Salt-1024x435.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/BS-66-on-Salt-1024x435.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/BS-66-on-Salt-300x127.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Blinding white on both sides of the narrow two-laned asphalt, that\u2019s all I see for several miles. And then, the pavement ends and I spot a dot of orange. It is a car on the salt, #66 painted on the side, and someone is photographing the stunning image. I grabbed my sunhat and jumped out of the Scion just as #66 came roaring onto the parking lot. I waved, pointing my camera at the car. Two really nice guys; we talked racing, and where they\u2019ve been (they\u2019ve raced and shown cars in 47 states, so far) and where they are going. They liked my car too, and my quest. Mutual admiration!
