Every weekend, week after week, you have to decide \u2013 do I stay home, and enjoy my beautiful valley? Or, do I go east for 15 miles into the steep brown hills towards Virginia City and explore the ghost towns of mining days gone by? Or, heaven forbid, do I drive 20 miles west over Spooner Summit and mess around on the forested shores of the second deepest lake in all the country? Lake Tahoe, you know. I declare, I don\u2019t know how they stand it. I\u2019ve gone in both directions, now I\u2019m taking a poll, so tell me, what would you do?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Virginia City, Historic Mining Town. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/VC-Bill-and-Tram.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1198\" title=\"VC Bill and Tram\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/VC-Bill-and-Tram-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Bill promised 10 minutes of true stories, and 10 minutes of BS, \u201cand it\u2019s up to you,\u201d he said, \u201cto figure out which is which.\u201d That was the introduction to the Virginia City Tram Tour, and it matches the approach of Mark Twain, who worked at Virginia City\u2019s <em>Enterprise<\/em> newspaper in the early 1860\u2019s. \u201cTo find a petrified man, or break a stranger&#8217;s leg, or cave an imaginary mine, or discover some dead Indians in a Gold Hill tunnel, or massacre a family at Dutch Nick&#8217;s, were feats and calamities that we never<a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/VC-Mark-Twain-Museum-Sign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1202\" title=\"VC Mark Twain Museum Sign\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/VC-Mark-Twain-Museum-Sign-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> hesitated about devising when the public needed matters of thrilling interest for breakfast.\u201d <em>From Mark Twain&#8217;s Letters from Washington, Number IX, Territorial Enterprise, March 7, 1868. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>One thing Bill pointed out was the \u201cUnblindfolded Statue of Justice\u201d that graces the courthouse, a truth; I saw her myself. I\u2019m not so sure about the funeral parade for the town\u2019s most famous \u201clady\u201d but you can visit her grave, all alone on a hill behind a picket fence, and there is a plaque in town noting her reputation. The Comstock Lode is the <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/VC-Mine-and-Hills.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1205\" title=\"VC Mine and Hills\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/VC-Mine-and-Hills-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/VC-Mine-and-Hills-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/VC-Mine-and-Hills-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a>real history of Virginia City, remnants of the mines, and the millions, and millionaires, are everywhere, get a pass for train rides, mine tours, and wild west shootouts. In February 2009, the town received the Distinctive Destinations Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Sitting at 6,200 feet, it deserves an award for \u201cDistinctive Scenery\u201d too. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitvirginiacitynv.com\/\">http:\/\/www.visitvirginiacitynv.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lake Tahoe, the Jewel of the High Sierra. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Gleaming-Hotel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1207\" title=\"LT Gleaming Hotel\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Gleaming-Hotel-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>No BS\u2013 Lake Tahoe is the #1 most popular destination in the US. Factually, it\u2019s the highest lake of its size \u2013 6,229 feet above sea level; and the second deepest, maximum 1,645. It is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, and it literally sparkles. The color scheme is blue\/green\/white, with an accent of sandy-beach sand around the edges, here and there. Blue skies reflected in blue waters; soaring green firs that grow right up to the edge; seasonally-appropriate snow tops. South Lake Tahoe offers the hoopla of Harrah\u2019s and<a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Lodge-at-Zepher-Cove.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1209\" title=\"LT Lodge at Zepher Cove\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Lodge-at-Zepher-Cove-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Lodge-at-Zepher-Cove-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Lodge-at-Zepher-Cove-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> other sleek highrises for gambling, or big-name entertainment. Places like Zephyr\u2019s Cove show off with log cabins and lodges, cruises on the lake, lazing on the beach, name your pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>Beth and five of her friends were waiting for margaritas-in-a-cup as I finished my lunch at Zephyr Cove Restaurant. \u201cWe\u2019re spending the afternoon right out there on the beach,\u201d she told me. I chatted with Marge and Cody in the gift shop. They didn\u2019t check into the lodge in time for the 1 PM lake cruise, \u201cbut we\u2019re going tomorrow,\u201d they <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Beach-Mountains-Pier.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1211\" title=\"LT Beach Mountains Pier\" src=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Beach-Mountains-Pier-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Beach-Mountains-Pier-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/capitalcitiesusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/LT-Beach-Mountains-Pier-1024x763.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>assured me. There was a last vestige of melting snow in the parking lot, but the warm sand was perfect for an afternoon\u2019s stay. I took my shoes off and waded in. Of course. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zephyrcove.com\/lake-tahoe-history.aspx\">http:\/\/www.zephyrcove.com\/lake-tahoe-history.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s coming back to Carson City.
